Our History
Our history began with one man’s vision. His name was Rosendo Corrales, an emigrant from Sinaloa, Mexico. He met his wife, Aurelia Corrales (also a Mexican emigrant) in Wyoming and together they raised twelve children. The family eventually settled in Redwood City, California.
Rosendo’s spiritual journey began as a result of a void in his life. He had not known the love and nurturance of parents as he had been orphaned at an early age. He went through life yearning for something that nothing on earth could satisfy. He knew there was something more to life, but he was not quite sure what it was.
In the early 1950’s Rosendo had a vision. In this vision God spoke to him and told him to find a church because He wanted to bless him and his wife. Finally, the emptiness in Rosendo’s soul was filled to overflowing and his heart almost burst from pure joy that God was answering the cry of his heart. Rosendo had never set foot in a church before and did not know the first thing about finding one, but this powerful and moving encounter with the Lord could not be ignored. A fire had been lit in his soul and nothing was going to stop him from his newfound desire to know God and to experience His unconditional love and forgiveness.
Rosendo began earnestly praying to know God’s perfect plan for his life and to guide him in finding a church where he and his wife could attend. The Lord led him to a Spanish-speaking Assemblies of God church in San Jose called Templo La Hermosa. It was there, during a revival campaign in 1952, that he had the life-changing experience of receiving God’s gift of Salvation through His son, Jesus Christ. His life was never the same again. After a couple of years of attending church, Rosendo started a bible study class in San Mateo with a small group of people.
In 1957 this small band of new Christians struck out on their own and began holding weekly home services. Soon afterwards, God placed a burden in Rosendo’s heart to start a church of believers and to evangelize other Latinos for Christ. During that time, Spanish-speaking evangelical churches were not easy to find on the San Francisco peninsula. Against all odds, this humble man - who had no formal education and could not read, chose to heed God’s call upon his life and became the founding pastor of the nascent church, Templo La Luz.
The new church rented a baptist church in San Mateo for a few years, but due to the high cost of renting, Templo La Luz relocated in the early 1960’s to Rosendo and Aurelia’s home in Redwood City. At times it was difficult managing a house full of children while preparing for two weekly services, including two services on Sunday; but they did this willingly for several years.
Around 1967, Templo La Luz outgrew the small house and relocated to a church in Menlo Park. After many years of faithful and dedicated service, Pastor Corrales felt it was time to hand over the reins to someone else. Rev. John Alonzo became the new pastor and was instrumental in formalizing our church’s name, Templo La Luz, and officially incorporating it into the Assemblies of God denomination.
In 1971, Templo La Luz moved to a small foursquare church in Redwood City. Shortly thereafter, Rev. John Alonzo resigned from his position of pastor and Rev. John Olivan stepped in to take his place. On or about 1975, Rev. Olivan resigned to take a position at another church. For the first time in its history, Templo La Luz was left without a pastor. But God had a plan. Since 1959, Paul Corrales, Rosendo’s son, had quietly and faithfully served as assistant pastor. Without fanfare, he took up the reins and became the interim pastor while holding down a full-time job as an auto painter.
In 1980, the small building was filled to overflowing and once again Templo La Luz moved to its current location at 2000 Woodside Road in Redwood City. The church’s membership continued to grow and the need for a full-time pastor was evident. It was at this time that Rev. Paul Corrales became the official pastor of Templo La Luz to the present time.
God has blessed Templo La Luz throughout the years with many people who have entered its doors and received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and since its humble beginnings in a small house in San Mateo our church continues its approach to minister to both the English and Spanish speaking individual. Oftentimes in a Latino family the parents or grandparents are predominantly Spanish speakers, while their children and grandchildren primarily speak English. It is our privilege and mandate to minister to both language groups, while maintaining a sense of unity within individual families as well as our own church family.
Nuestra Historia
Nuestra historia comenzó con la visión de un hombre. Su nombre era Rosendo Corrales, un inmigrante de Sinaloa, México. El conoció a su esposa Aurelia Corrales (También una inmigrante Mexicana) en Wyoming y juntos hicieron una familia de doce hijos. La familia eventualmente se estableció en Redwood City, California.
La jornada espiritual del hermano Rosendo fue el resultado de un vacio en su vida. El nunca conoció el amor y la protección de sus padres, pues quedo huérfano a una muy temprana edad. El iba por la vida buscando algo que lo pudiera satisfacer. El sabía que había algo más en esta vida, pero no sabía que era ese algo.
Al principio del año 1950, el hermano Rosendo tuvo una visión y esta visión, Dios le hablo y le dijo que buscara una Iglesia, pues El quería bendecirlo a él y a su esposa. Finalmente, el vacio que había en el alma del hermano Rosendo fue sobrellenado y el corazón casi se le salió del pecho del gozo de saber que Dios había contestado al llamado de su corazón. El hermano Rosendo nunca había visitado una Iglesia y no sabía cómo encontrar una, pero el poderoso encuentro que había tenido con El Señor no podía ser ignorado. Un fuego se había prendido en su alma y nada iba a parar el deseo que el sentía de conocer al Señor y de experimentar su amor y perdón incondicional.
El hermano Rosendo empezó a orar arduamente para conocer el plan perfecto que El Señor tenia para su vida, y para que El le guiara a encontrar una Iglesia donde él y su esposa pudieran atender. El Señor lo guio hacia una Iglesia localizada en San José, esta Iglesia era de habla hispana y su nombre era, Templo La Hermosa. Fue ahí, durante una campana de avivamiento en el año 1952, que el tubo la experiencia más especial de su vida, al recibir el regalo de Salvación de parte de Dios por medio de su hijo Jesucristo. Su vida nunca fue igual, después de dos anos de atender a esta Iglesia, El hermano Rosendo comenzó un estudio bíblico con un grupo pequeño de personas en la ciudad de San Mateo.
En el año 1957 este pequeño grupo de nuevos cristianos, se aventuraron a empezar servicios semanales en sus casas. Poco después, El Señor puso en el corazón del hermano Rosendo empezar una Iglesia y ganar a otros latinos para Cristo. Durante ese tiempo era difícil encontrar Iglesias de habla hispana en el área de la Península de San Francisco. Aun contra todos los obstáculos, este hombre humilde, quien no había tenido ninguna educación oficial y que no sabía leer, decidió efectuar el llamado de Dios para su vida y se convirtió en el pastor fundador de la Iglesia naciente, Templo La Luz.
Por pocos anos, La nueva Iglesia rento el edificio de una Iglesia Bautista en San Mateo, pero a causa del alto costo de la renta, en el año 1960, Templo La Luz se movió de este lugar a la casa del hermano Rosendo y su esposa Aurelia en Redwood City. Algunas veces era difícil manejar su casa llena de niños, mientras que se preparaban para dos servicios semanales, incluyendo dos servicios los domingos, pero todo lo hicieron voluntariamente por varios anos.
Cerca del año 1967, Templo La Luz creció mas de la pequeña casa del hermano Rosendo y se relocalizo a Menlo Park. Después de muchos anos de fidelidad y dedicación al servicio, el pastor Corrales sintió que era tiempo de entregarle el cargo a alguien más. El Reverendo, John Alonzo llego a ser el nuevo pastor y fue un instrumento para formalizar el nombre de nuestra Iglesia, Templo La Luz y oficialmente incorporarla a la denominación de las Asambleas de Dios.
En el año 1971, Templo La Luz se movió a una pequeña Iglesia en Redwood City, poco después, El Reverendo John Alonzo renuncio a su posición de pastor y el Reverendo John Olivan tomo su lugar. Más o menos por año 1975, el Reverendo John Olivan renuncio de su cargo como pastor para tomar una posición en otra Iglesia. Por primera vez en la historia, Templo La Luz se quedo sin pastor, pero Dios tenía un plan. Desde el año 1959, Pablo Corrales, uno de los hijos del hermano Rosendo, había servido silenciosa y fielmente como asistente de pastor. Sin ninguna algarabía el hermano Pablo Corrales, tomo el cargo y vino a ser el pastor interino mientras que seguía manteniendo su trabajo a tiempo completo pindando carros.
En el año 1980, el pequeño edificio se sobrelleno y una vez más Templo La Luz se movió de lugar, ahora a su locación actual en 2000 Woodside Road en Redwood City. La membrecía de la Iglesia continúo creciendo y la necesidad por un pastor a tiempo completo era evidente, fue entonces cuando el Reverendo Pablo Corrales se convirtió en el Pastor Oficial de Templo La Luz, hasta el tiempo presente.
El Señor ha bendecido a Templo La Luz a través de los anos con muchas personas que han entrado a sus puertas y recibido a Jesucristo como su Señor y Salvador, y desde sus principios humildes en un casa pequeña, nuestra Iglesia continúa su misión de ministrar a personas tanto de habla española como Inglesa. Comúnmente en las familias Latinas, los padres o abuelos pronominalmente hablan Español mientras que sus hijos y nietos primordialmente hablan Ingles. Es nuestro privilegio y mandato, ministrar por medio de los dos lenguajes, mientras que mantenemos un sentir de unidad entre familias asimismo mantenemos nuestra familia de la Iglesia.
